New arrivals; old business

Via Flickr:
I was having trouble finding a particular movie (The Girl who Played with Fire) on-demand and on-line so I had to get in the car and take a trip to one of the few remaining video stores.

I used the Camera+ Tailfins filter to get the retro feel.

Modern memorial words. Anne Lind.

Via Flickr:
This headstone at Mount Hope Cemetery caught my attention as it looked so modern. I took the shot but didn't read the inscription until editing the shot. Lovely words.

FlameOz, Buskerfest 2011

FlameOz, Buskerfest 2011 - #238/365 by PJMixer

We went downtown to see Buskerfest after really enjoying it in 2010.  Unfortunately we didn't plan it very well this year, so the afternoon didn't start very well with poor viewing angles for the kids and constant battles with the crowds.  We had a nice dinner at Mercatto and did a second pass and caught this spectacular fire show before heading home.  If you plan your visit well and are patient with the crowds then this is a great annual festival here in Toronto.  For other shots from Buskerfest click here (I'll try and add shots from 2010 when I get a chance).

Reaching out to all Canadians

Via Flickr:
Jack Layton, leader of the NDP and official opposition passed away this morning after a tough battle against cancer. Hundreds of people showed up to write their thoughts in chalk and mourn the passing of a man that connected with a wide variety of Canadians, young and old.

Jacques and the replica F1 suit

Via Flickr:
My brother made this replica F1 racing suit when Jacques Villeneuve won the F1 World Championship. This was the first time my wife met one of her all time favourite Canadians and Jacques kindly autographed the suit, along with a BAR hat.

Goodbye old friend

Goodbye old friend - #222/365, a photo by PJMixer on Flickr.
Via Flickr:
My wife and I said goodbye to our first car. We had put 183,320 kms on this 1993 Mazda 626. Apart from one big dent in her left hip, some scratches and scars, she still looked a nice car when they loaded her on the trailer destined for the crusher. Although the engine and even the original clutch were still good, her brakes were completely gone and there was a nasty loud rattle from her underside. And she needed a little work and encouragement to pass her last emission test. So the cruel fact is - I doubt whether anyone would pay much more than the salage value knowing they'd have to invest at least a grand to get her back in driving condition. How many cars go through their life with only one owner ? We're sad to say goodbye to an old friend.

Tonya

Via Flickr:
One of the joys of working at Yonge and Dundas is the variety and number of people about and the events that occur at Yonge Dundas Square. Today, there was a small exhibit bringing attention to the crimes of human trafficking, called FACE IT. The exhibit asked people to write something as a contribution or have their photo taken to be part of a petition that the group hope to take to the Canadian government (as Canada unfortunately does have a serious criminal role to play in this growing global concern).

I had my photo taken, then asked one of the volunteers about the exhibit and about herself as part of my 100 Stranger project. Tonya and her husband moved to Canada in May from Barbados. She has lived here in the past on a few occasions and says she's ready for the winter. She likes how multicultural Toronto is. As my wife and I had honeymooned and celebrated our 10th anniversary in Barbados many years ago, we talked a while about her beautiful homeland. She says that the resort heavy West coast is suffering and the reefs are starting to die, but luckily the East coast (her favourite part of the island) remains largely unspoiled.

I'm pleased that I had a chance to meet Tonya and include reference to such a worthy humanitarian cause in my project.

Tonya is #99 in my 100 strangers project.

Mom and son subbing in

Via Flickr:
My wife hadn't played ultimate in about 14 years and my son hadn't played in the adult competitive league yet, they both subbed in for my regular Monday night team and played solid points and we got to share a few family points, made my day.
